Prerequisites

In the Fundamentals Skills program, the following basic skills were covered:

  • Fielding a ball
  • Throwing
  • Baserunning
  • Batting
  • Pitching
  • Catching
  • Bunting

In this course we will expand the level of fundamental skills to include the following components:

  • Force Play
  • Tagging at the base
  • Tagging between bases
  • Fielding positions and responsibilities
  • Assessing skills
  • Basic Rules
  • A review of the Game Sense approach
  • The bent leg slide
  • [list these in course order, match text to topic headings]

In this course we have also provided a number of training drills to practise these skills. When implementing the training drills, it is important to remember the Game Sense approach.

These skill components are progressive and come in to playing the game of softball (as opposed to the modified games in the SBU program). An overview of these ‘game’ skills is provided.

It is strongly recommended that these skills are not introduced into the training sessions until all players have mastered the fundamental skills of fielding, overhand throwing, base running, batting and where applicable pitching and catching
